What to see

AMONG waters

...where not only the waters are united at the con uence but also thoughts that converge into one stronger flow...

The town of Medvode (“Between the Waters” in Slovenian) got its name when the settlement started to develop at the confluence of the Sava and Sora Rivers, which has remained the centre of the town. The water is also an important factor of development and everyday life elsewhere in the community. Zbilje Lake – one of the main tourist sites in the municipality – was created due to the dam on the Sava River. In the middle of the fields in Spodnje Pirniče lies the Straža Warm Spring, a place where the washerwomen used to do laundry and which is today popular among numerous bathers. The water is also an important source of life in the village of Hraše, where a real animal kingdom has found its home in the wetland.

AMONG hills

...in the shelter of trees, clean air and water at the Polhov Gradec dolomites Landscape Park...

The town of Medvode is situated between two well-known hills; Grmada, taller sister of the better known Šmarna Hill, on one side and a large part of the Polhov Gradec Dolomites on the other. Numerous peaks, such as the historical Jeterbenk, the adorable St Jacob, the overgrown Tošč and Hom, the populated Osolnik, the rocky Grmada and the inhabited Govejek, represent a wonderful starting point for hikers, offering breath-taking views as well as diverse flora and fauna. In the month of May, you can see the mysterious and lovely flowers of the protected Blagay’s Daphne (Daphne blagayana).

AMONG people

...where you are always warmly welcomed and presented with our heritage in a hospitable and respectful manner ...

"Oh Triglav, my home, how gorgeous you are...” once said Jakob Aljaž, priest, composer, publicist and mountaineer, born on 6 July 1845 in the village of Zavrh near Medvode. When he served as a priest in the village of Dovje, he bought the peak of Kredarica for five guilders and built a modest shelter there, Aljaž Tower, which has become one of the most significant symbols of the Slovenian nation. The village of Spodnje Pirniče is the birthplace of Franc Rozman Stane, Partisan national hero, born on 27 March 1911, who set up the Styrian Battalion and participated in the attack on Šoštanj and many other battles during the winter of 1941/42. He was awarded a number of titles, including the Commander of the Second Group of Detachments, Commander of the 4th Styrian Operational Zone and Commander of the Main Staff of the National Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments. Moreover, priest and writer Fran Saleški Finžgar, author of one of the most significant Slovenian historical novels, Pod svobodnim soncem (Under the Free Sun), worked in the village of Sora near Medvode for many years. His play Veriga (The Chain) was inspired by the nearby village of Senica, where it is still staged every few years..

AMONG legends

...where the contours of the past and the feelings of the present coexist and where the spirit of ancient times evokes memories...

Do you know of the Hertenberg knights who used to rob the rich and give to the poor? Have you heard the legend of the lord of Smlednik Castle who lost a game of cards against the devil and had to give up his wealth, daughter and soul? What about the story of the beggar who was eaten by a calf, which is the reason why Pirniče are also called the “Calf’s Village”?

AMONG the goodies

...made to the recipes of our grandmothers, with unforgettable flavours and an added pinch of modern cuisine...

We can easily say that the thirsty and hungry visitors of Medvode are well taken care of. We have almost everything that is needed for a modern culinary offer: waters, forests, meadows and pastures, fields and orchards, farms, some excellent inns, three tourist farms, etc. Medvode is situated near Ljubljana and is one of the most visited areas for day-trippers, hikers and travellers. There are three inns bearing the “Gostilna Slovenija” (Slovenia Inn) title: Belšak Inn in Golo Brdo, Dobnikar Inn in Topol and Mihovec Inn in Zgornje Pirniče.

AMONG the events

...where time flies, the good atmosphere is contagious and legends are born...

Although Medvode is a young town, it boasts a number of events that have been attracting visitors from near and far for many years. In recent years, the Medvode Sport Hall became a place known for high-visibility events, such as the concert of the a cappella group Perpetum Jazzile, award ceremony of “Slovenian of the Year”, national dancing championship, international badminton championship, New Year’s Eve parties, carnival, etc. What is more, numerous local cultural, tourism and sports associations organise a variety of events, making sure that people never get bored in the place between the waters.

AMONG free time

...where you can take a rest listening to the murmuring of a river or a stream and otherwise relax in nature...

Are you interested in taking a pleasant walk, playing a noble sport or rowing a boat? Nowadays, pleasant situations for spending your free time are as rare as the free time itself. The majestic Smlednik Castle ruins offer breath-taking views and represent a perfect hiking destination. You can play golf on the Diners golf course nearby, relax in Camp Smlednik in the village of Dragočajna or row a boat on Lake Zbilje, which offers you an unforgettable experience of being in touch with genuine nature accompanied by numerous swans.

AMONG friends

...where time becomes eternal and the distances are insignificant, the boundaries blurred and social gatherings inseparable...

In 2015, the Municipality of Medvode signed its first Twinning Charter with the French town of Crest and started strengthening its international cooperation with the Italian town of Ponte San Nicolo, the German town of Nidda and the Serbian town of Zaječar. The towns are not only connected by common European projects but also by different cultural and tourist exchanges and, most of all, by sincere friendships formed during the visits.
